Retroshare is a private and secure decentralised commmunication platform. It lets you share securely your friends, using a web-of-trust to authenticate peers and OpenSSL to encrypt all communication. RetroShare provides filesharing, chat, messages and channels.
This is achieved through direct encrypted connections between peers (friend-2-friend). All personal information is stored on YOUR computer, and only shared with your friends. There is no need to trust a central corporate entity.
Authentication is provided using a decentralised web-of-trust (like PGP). Again, this removes the need for a central server to ‘authenticate your friends.

Note from the Editor: As with any P2P software, only time will tell whether it becomes “the next big thing”. Nevertheless, this software has many chances of achieving this goal as it solves most of the problems (security-related, mainly) that previous approaches had, such as relying on an unknown third party for authentication.
